5 Healthy Scalp Tips

How to achieve a healthy scalp and maintain a healthy scalp!

Dry itchy scalp, excessive dandruff, sandy scalp?

This year at Brown Beauty Complete we are continuing to focus on our inner beauty not only the outer beauty. But how can we transition comfortably? Simply by understanding what is happening to our outsides by looking inside. Are you frustrated with itchy dry and flaky scalp? Are you tired of looking at sandy hair and sand looking flakes on your shoulders on a new shirt?

Here are five tips that can help you at home to manage your scalp issues.

Tip #1 - Exfoliate Your Scalp

Yes, this is a thing. Much like exfoliating your skin, exfoliating your scalp gently lifts the top layer of dry skin. Scalp exfoliators typically remove dead skin with either small amounts of salicylic acid (more commonly found in acne products), or granules that dissolve.

Tip #2 - Shampoo Your Hair More Often

Shampoo your hair more often. Use shampoos that are a specialized dandruff shampoo it's the most effective and quickest way to treat dandruff. They can be obtained via prescription (for stronger stuff) or over-the-counter and contain zinc or sulfur, which can reduce yeast populations. If you are only shampooing your hair once or every two weeks you should add an extra hair wash day to your routine to help with your scalp issues.

Tip #3 - Try Baking Soda

Baking soda, acts as a scrub and exfoliates the scalp gently, without irritating it and removing dead skin cells. Exfoliation is essential to ensure there is no build up of flakes on the scalp that make dandruff even more visible. You can simply add some baking soda to your shampoo while washing hair to derive its benefits.

Tip #4 - Try Neem

Neem extract plays in almost all skin medications because of its antibacterial and antifungal qualities. Since dandruff can mostly be attributed to fungal colonization of scalp, it is only right to turn to this age-old remedy for skin ailments. Natural is always the best way to go; however use a very diluted version of neem (neem boiled in water) for the scalp as concentrated versions may only irritate the skin further.

Tip #5 - Consult your local Trichologist

Have you tried everything under the sun and you see no relief? Contact your local Trichologist. A trichologist is a specialist who focuses on trichology — the study of diseases or problems related to the hair and scalp, as well as their treatments. When to See a Trichologist?

Most people begin seeking out a trichologist when experiencing any of the following:

  1. Hair loss

  2. Hair breakage

  3. Hair thinning

  4. Alopecia

  5. Dandruff

  6. Other scalp conditions

A trichologist can help diagnose whatever problems you are experiencing and suggest appropriate treatments to increase the health of your scalp and hair. However, you don't have to be experiencing hair loss, scalp issues or any other condition to seek treatment from a specialist certified trichologist. You may seek treatment from a trichologist in order to get in front of future problems with your hair and scalp. Or you may seek a consultation with a qualified professional so they can recommend the most appropriate products or treatments for your unique hair and scalp or to help limit hair loss. Many of us worry about issues with our scalp health and hair loss, especially as we age or experience hair loss due to diet changes, environmental factors or stress.

Bonus Tip: Sometimes you just have to go old school! Remember Hot Oil Treatments?

“Oil-based treatments can help to balance some of the scalp’s excessive oil production. “Applying oils to the scalp will help draw oils from it and remove them. It’s the classic law of attraction, where like substances attract each other.” You can try heating up the oils in a microwave and gently applying it to your head. Be careful not to make the oil too hot, as doing so increases the risk of burning your scalp. Leave on scalp for 5-10 minutes then rinse, shampoo and condition hair. But it won’t be a cure-all. “While helpful for combatting dryness, hot oil treatments alone cannot treat dandruff caused by the growth of fungus.” Click Here to try some of Brown Beauty Complete Oils to help you on your healthy scalp journey.
