Stop Using Your Hair Oil Incorrectly

How to use hair growth oils the correct way.

Curly Hair Craves Moisture

Have you been seeing those posts saying "stop using hair oil" for moisture for your hair? It's a terrible click bate that needs to be discussed. It may be some type of hair may not need much oil but it fails to explain how to properly use it. Most of these posts are to confuse you and trick you into buying whatever cream they use or sell. But I am here to give you tips on how to properly moisture your hair. These methods will allow you to be successful in feeding your hair properly. Healthy hair habits promotes healthy hair growth.

Tip #1 - Remember Oil is a Sealant

Oils lock in whatever moisture has already been put into the hair. If you are using hair oil on your dry hair you are not sealing in any moisture. You are simply coating the shaft of your hair. 1st tip is to seal in the moisture after you have shampooed and conditioned your hair. Your hair will still have the moisture and nutrients, seal it with the oil. If your hair is low in porosity be careful of how much oil is used.

Tip #2 - Learn the L.O.C. Methods

The LOC method, also known as the liquid, oil, cream method, is the best way to keep natural hair moisturized. Lack of moisture can cause breakage, dry/brittle hair, and frizz.

Using the LOC after every wash will reduce damage, increase elasticity, and improve the overall feel and look of your hair. Keeping your hair moisturized is also crucial for hair growth.

It consist of hydrating the hair with water which is your liquid or L, hold on to that moisture with oil or O and then applying a cream (C) product to close the hair cuticle which prevents moisture loss or act as a sealer.

The term oil in the LOC method is just that—an oil. The beauty of an oil is that it can create a layer around the hair shaft that prevents water from escaping, which in turn helps hair to stay moisturized for longer periods. Creams do a similar job, but as the last step in the LOC method, they are meant to be the heaviest out of the bunch. Whether your hair prefers a thick moisturizer that is like a smoothie or butter, this final step ensures hair has retained as much hydration as it can on the hair shaft.

Tip #3 - My Personal Hair Routine

In the mornings my big curly hair is flat! Sleeping with my bonnet on makes my hair shrink. This is normal and I'm sure it happens to you too. Tip 3 is my L.O.C steps I personally use on a regular basis. I use a spray bottle with water in it to loosen up my curls. My curls begin to relax and become elongated. Next I add my favorite leave in conditioner all over my curls. I use a generous amount of it because I have a lot of hair. Then I cover my hands with my oil and run it from the bottom of my curls/coils to the top of my scalp. Paying close attention to the ends because that is were my hair is mostly dry. The LOC Method is simple and you should use it in any order that fits you. Some days if my hair is extremely dry I will use a heavy butter cream instead of my leave conditioner.

Tip #4 - Applying Hair Oil to Your Scalp During Protective Styles.

  1. When applying moisture to your scalp when your hair is in a protective style like box braids or any style similar you should spray a light leave in conditioner on your scalp first then add the oil to seal it.

  2. Water in a spray bottle is just fine! Spray a light mist over your scalp first then add the oil.

  3. Don't miss the strands of hair in the shaft of the braids. Make sure you are adding the moisture throughout the braids covering all of your hair.

Doing the LOC Method during protective styles promotes longevity of that style and healthy hair growth.

Tip #5 - Don't Be Afraid of Wet Hair!

For years we have been taught to never go outside with wet hair. This is simply not true. Colds are caused by viruses, so you can't catch a cold from going outside with wet hair. And wet hair won't make you more attractive to germs. People often associate going outside with wet hair with getting sick because exposure to germs is more likely when you go outside. In reality, the common cold is transmitted through bodily fluids, such as when people who are sick sneeze, cough or blow their nose.
